iOS 14 possible new features

As we all eagerly await the announcement of iOS 14, there are plenty of rumors to unpack about what we can expect. Although we can't know for sure whether these leaks are the real deal, there is definitely plenty to be excited about.

Launch date

Apple will unveil iOS 14 at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2020 on June 22. Apple will make available the beta version of iOS 14 on June 22, and a stable public release is scheduled together with the release of iPhone 12, in September 2020.

Compatibility

If rumors are to be believed, iOS14 will be compatible with all devices running iOS 13. This is great news for people who are still faithful to older models.

Mentions in Messages

Apple's Messages app may include a feature that is already present in other messaging apps like Slack and WhatsApp, such as the ability to mention specific people in group chats by adding an @ symbol before their name.

Home screen

Be prepared to see a drastically different home screen in iOS 14. The latest version of iOS will bring a list view option that would allow you to organize apps as a list instead of the current grid view.

New AR App

Apple is seemingly planning to introduce a new augmented reality app in iOS14. The app would allow you to get more information about a physical product you are seeing at a store without the need to search for it online. The app may have integrations with Apple Store and Starbucks, with a possibility of expansion to other retailers as well.

Apple Maps

Apple Maps could provide additional information for select businesses in iOS 14, such as specific Genius bar services offered by an Apple Store, location with discounts for childer, movie theathers with IMAX showtimes etc.

Safari

Safari in iOS14 could offer a built-in translation feature that would allow users translate webpages without the need of using third-party app or service.

Default apps

Since the rollout of first iPhone, Apple has made its own preinstalled apps like Maps or Music the default choice. This could change in iOS 14, as Apple could enable you to choose third-party apps instead, for example, Spotify instead of Apple Music or Google Maps instead of Apple Maps.

CarKey

The CarKey API has been under development since iOS 13, but the feature is expected to see the light of the day with iOS 14. CarKey lets users lock, unlock, and start a car using an iPhone or Apple Watch.
The pairing process will be done via the wallet app with NFC-compatible cars, as users only need to hold the device near the vehicle to use it as a key.

Keyboard brightness shortcut

The release of iOS 14 will probably include the new keyboard shortcuts to change the brightness of the iPad screen or even the backlight of the keyboard.

Clips API

Clips is the new API that would allow developers to provide interactive and dynamic content from their apps even if users did not install them. The Clips API is directly related to the QR Code reader, so users will be able to scan a code linked to an app and then interact with it directly from a card that will appear on the screen.
