Apple iPhone 12 Release

In an online event, Apple has last night released four brand-new smartphones - iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Mini, iPhone 12 Pro, and iPhone 12 Pro Max. All these phones have certain things in common, but they are not the same.

iPhone 12

Let’s start from the baseline iPhone 12. The iPhone 12 is built of an aluminum frame coupled with (as Apple claims) 4 times more durable glass on the front and the back than before. This means that the iPhone is now even more shatter-proof than before, which is an amazing feature. The phone is IP68 certified for water and dust resistance, and it can endure up to 30 minutes of submersion down to 6m below the surface.

There is a 6.1” Super Retina XDR OLED display with HDR10 support on the front of the baseline model. This is a huge step forward as Apple has finally moved away from LCDs and now offers phones that exclusively have OLED displays. The display stretches from edge to edge and sadly still has the infamous notch. On the other hand, the notch is somewhat of a trademark for Apple at this point, so we’ll just have to live with it. The pixel density of the screen is around 460ppi, which is more than enough for an outstanding visual experience.

On the inside, the new iPhone comes with a brand-new chipset. The Apple A14 Bionic is the first Apple chipset built on a 5nm process. This means that the speeds will truly be immense. Apple claims that the A14 Bionic is the most powerful chipset in the industry, and as Apple has historically built excellent silicon, we believe that the claim is not far away from the truth. Another cool feature of the iPhone 12 is that it is 5G enabled. Apple has collaborated with Verizon in the States, producing the phone capable of reaching the incredible 5G speeds. Verizon has built its 5G network in more than 60 cities around the States, which means that the iPhone 12 users in, for example, New York, Chigaco, or LA, will have a ready 5G network to connect to out-of-the-box.

5G connectivity, paired with the new silicon, has enabled the new device to be quite a beast in terms of power and speed. Somewhat unexpectedly, Apple has partnered up with a gaming industry giant, Riot Games, whose developers have made a mobile version of their flagship desktop game League of Legends. Both Riot and Apple claim that the iPhone 12 will be perfectly able to run League flawlessly, and even outside of the wireless network if connected to the 5G. This is a huge step forward in mobile gaming, given that League is one of the most graphically intensive games (in certain moments at least - looking at you, big, flashy team fights).
Regarding memory, the iPhone 12 comes, baseline, with 64GB of storage, but there are also versions with 128GB and 256GB of internal storage memory. Honestly, we are not sure if we can recommend the 64GB version, simply taking future-proofing into account. If you’re a person who likes to listen to music offline or play games, then perhaps 64GB of memory will be a bit too little, and even more so if you like to take photos!

Speaking of photos, the iPhone 12 comes with two camera sensors on the back. The main sensor is a 12MP wide sensor (22mm) with an aperture of f/1.6 and a pixel size of 1.4µm. The sensor is equipped with dual pixel PDAF and OIS for incredible stills. The secondary sensor is also a 12MP ultrawide one, with an aperture of f/2.4. Combined, these two sensors are working flawlessly, and they will surely allow you to create remarkable photos and videos. In terms of video, using the main camera setup, the iPhone 12 can capture 4K videos at 24, 30, and 60fps, allowing for some professional-grade videos (but quite memory heavy - see why 64GB isn’t enough?) On the other hand, you’ll also be able to capture 1080p FullHD videos at 30, 60, 120, and 240 fps with awesome slow-motion capabilities. On the front side, that notch that we’ve already discussed houses a 12MP sensor that’s well capable of producing great selfies and phenomenally serves its primary purpose of providing for crisp video calls.

Apart from the camera, the notch also houses a FaceID scanner together with the little LEDs that fire up when an app’s using either your camera or your microphone so that you know when you’re being watched or listened to. This is just a nice security feature that’s definitely welcome.
We still don’t know the exact battery size that the iPhone 12 will come with as this is information that Apple doesn’t disclose, but we do know that the phone will come with 18W fast charging and even 15W fast Qi wireless charging.

The phone will come in five distinct, gorgeous colors - Black, White, Red, Green, and Blue.

iPhone 12 Mini

Another addition to the iPhone 12 family, the Mini version doesn’t drastically differ from the iPhone 12. There are two main differences. The obvious one is the screen size. The iPhone 12 Mini comes with a smaller form factor that will house a smaller 5.4” display. The quality is the same, so you’ll have the same Super Retina XDR OLED display. Because the same display is squished to a smaller size, you can expect very high detailed visuals because the pixel density is increased this way. The iPhone 12 Mini actually houses a display with 476ppi density.

Another difference is the battery size. As said before, we don’t know what the size of the battery will be, but due to the form factor, we can be sure that it will be smaller than the one in the baseline iPhone 12. Everything else is the same, so you can be certain that the Mini will be an incredibly powerful handset.

iPhone 12 Pro

Unlike the baseline iPhone 12, the Pro version’s frame is built of stainless steel, not aluminum. Everything else is pretty much the same, the same chipset, the same power. Some internal differences exist. For example, the iPhone 12 Pro’s baseline memory option is 128GB of storage, and also available are 256GB and 512GB versions. This change goes hand in hand with the biggest difference between the two devices - the camera setup.

The iPhone 12 Pro, in its setup, has two additional camera sensors compared to the iPhone 12. The third, telephoto sensor, therefore, has a resolution of 12MP as well, with an aperture of f/2.0. This sensor allows for a 2x optical zoom capability. Finally, the fourth sensor is a ToF 3D LiDAR sensor. This is not a camera lens, but it does wonders measuring the depth of field, providing outstanding portrait photos.

Unlike the iPhone 12 and the Mini, the Pro version will come in its own set of colors - Silver, Graphite, Gold, and Pacific Blue.

iPhone 12 Pro Max

The true flagship of this year’s lineup is the iPhone 12 Pro Max. This giant will have a stainless steel frame just like the Pro, however, the form factor will be different. The Pro Max will have a larger screen with a size of 6.7”. Its resolution will also be increased to relatively closely match the pixel density, which will be 458ppi on the larger display.

The iPhone 12 Pro Max will have the same storage memory capacity options as the Pro, but the camera setup is once again different. The most powerful camera setup in this year’s iPhone family will still consist of four sensors. The first sensor will still be a 12MP, f/1.6 wise lense, but with a larger 1.7µm pixel size and sensor-shift OIS for even better stabilization. The second, ultrawide lens is the same in all this year’s iPhones. The third lens in the Pro Max will be a 12MP, f/2.2 telephoto lens equipped with PDAF, OIS, and 2.5x optical zoom. Finally, the fourth sensor will be the same ToF sensor as in the Pro.

The iPhone 12 Pro Max will, because of its size, allow for a bigger battery, which Apple will surely deliver.

Conclusion

Now that you’ve read this, we believe that you’re probably impressed with this year’s iPhone lineup just as we are. However, here’s something to back you off them a little bit - their price. Of course, the price will vary depending on the version and the storage capacity, but here’s the pricing for the lowest storage options in different areas throughout the world.
